What is the Optimal Care for Skin After Microneedling?

Many people tend to neglect following the proper skin care after they’ve had a treatment like microneedling. But you see, the right aftercare is crucial to ensuring that you get the best and most long-lasting results!

But first, let’s talk about microneedling: what it is, what to expect during your procedure, and most importantly, what it can do for you.

So, whether you want to improve the appearance of acne scars and hyperpigmentation or simply want smoother, more even-toned, and more youthful-looking skin, read on and find out more.

All About Microneedling

As its name suggests, microneedling uses, well, micro needles. A treatment provider uses a device with tiny needles at the end to create micro-injuries all over the skin in order to trigger the body’s natural wound-healing process.

During this process, the skin’s collagen and elastin production also gets a boost – thus paving the way for a healthy new layer of skin that’s smoother, more even-toned, and more radiant.

One of the best things about microneedling is that it’s a minimally invasive procedure that’s safe and effective for all skin types. Hence, it requires very little downtime, if at all, and is especially effective for treating a wide range of skin concerns.

Speaking of which…

What Does Microneedling Do?

Microneedling is especially suitable for:

  • Improving the appearance of fines lines and wrinkles
  • Visibly fading or lightening acne scars, melasma, hyperpigmentation, and stretch marks
  • Evening out the complexion
  • Firming up and plumping the skin
  • Minimizing large pores

Since microneedling tunnels into the skin layers, this procedure is also sometimes paired with powerful serums or even PRP (protein-rich platelets derived from the patient’s own blood) for faster and deeper absorption – and more dramatic results!

And though it’s mostly used on the face, microneedling can actually be done all over the body, particularly on the neck, chest, and hands.

Does It Hurt? What Happens During the Procedure?

Not really. The needles are so tiny, so you can barely feel them. However, it’s possible to request for topical anesthesia or numbing cream for maximum comfort if your skin is particularly sensitive.

Before the treatment, the skin is cleansed, usually with soap and water to make sure that there aren’t any cosmetics or lotions on the skin that might block the needles. (Though it’s highly advisable to come in for your appointment without any make-up on and to use a gentle exfoliator a couple of days before to slough off any dead skin cells on the surface.)

Numbing cream is then applied and left on for the appropriate amount of time. Afterwards, the treatment provider will start running the microneedling device carefully over the treated area/s.

Generally, the procedure takes less than 30 minutes.

Proper Aftercare

Your skin might look a little red and inflamed right after the procedure. This is perfectly normal. In some cases, the skin might look like it’s glowing as a result.

However, it’s best to stay away from any anti-inflammatory drugs for one week following the procedure. This includes arnica supplements as these may interfere with the body’s natural healing process, which is crucial to producing desired results. For this same reason, resist the urge to apply ice to the treated area to alleviate any redness or swelling as well.

If you experience any soreness, you may ask your doctor or treatment provider for a mild painkiller.

To speed up the healing process and to avoid any complications, you should also avoid any direct exposure to harsh sunlight. If you must go outside, put a hat on and apply sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 beforehand.

What Results Can I Expect?

Any redness or inflammation tends to subside within a week or so, and some patients notice a significant difference at this time.

However, the most dramatic results usually kick in after about six weeks, once the skin has fully healed and the additional collagen and elastin kick in. At this point, you will have a healthy new layer of skin and our patients in Blue Springs who’ve had microneedling often notice the following improvements:

  • A radiant, more even complexion
  • Plumper, more youthful-looking skin
  • Smoother texture with smaller pores
  • Improved appearance of acne scars, fine lines, and wrinkles

However, you should also note that results may vary from person to person. It’s also possible that you might need more than one microneedling session to get the results you want.
